Dog Doors 101 : Three Things to Know

Back to Blog

Share

Letting your dog out to go to the bathroom or get some fresh air and sunshine can be done one of two ways. The first is you could play doorman for your dog and open the door for them every time they need to be let out. Of course, you will then need to let them back in the same way. Or, you can purchase and install a dog door that will allow your dog to come and go from your home as they please.

We think the latter sounds much easier. However, before you go out and purchase your new pet access door, there are a few things to consider.

Here are the top three things we think are the most important to know when buying a dog door.

1. Don’t Sacrifice Your Home’s Security

To some, installing a pet access door that is essentially a gaping hole in the side of your house with direct indoor access from outside might be a little unnerving. Some people leave their dogs at home with their dog door open all day while they’re away. Who’s to say something or someone won’t try to gain access to your home through your pet’s access point?

At Hale Pet Door, we keep the safety and security of your home and your family in mind when designing our dog doors. You can purchase one with added safety measures, or security barriers that can be purchased separately.

We’ve also kept the efficiency of your home in mind. Air-conditioning and heating bills are high enough. You don’t want to be paying more to heat or cool your home because your pet’s door is inefficient at keeping warm or cool air in.

With a Hale dog door, you can be sure that all of your bases are covered, and you, your home, and your pet are well taken care of.

2. Dog Doors Don’t Just Fit in People Doors

When you picture a dog door, the first image that might come to mind could be a simple square cut out in the wooden door that leads outside from your kitchen. These models are still available, but there are also different models giving you more placement possibilities.

Now, you can purchase a dog door that can be placed in the exterior wall of your garage. Or, straight into your glass french door. Glass door models do require professional installation, but are a great choice for a homeowner who wants their pet’s access to fit into the rest of their home decor.

Other model options are screen door models and storm glass models for homes that need them. Consider which model will work best for your dog and your home, then stick to shopping for those models. Don’t get overwhelmed by the amount of different dog doors on the market.

3. Size Is An Important Consideration

Although it would make the decision-making process a lot easier, dog doors are not “one size fits all”. You need to consider the size of your dog at all stages of your life.

For example, you wouldn’t want to purchase one that is the perfect size for your German Shepherd as a puppy. Sure it will work for now, but as they grow, that dog door will need to be replaced, and you’ll find yourself having to pay multiple times for what could have been a one-time purchase.

The best way to choose the correct sized access door for your pet is to consider their full-grown size, then size up. This will account for weight-gain and thicker coats in the colder months. It will also ensure your dog won’t suffer shoulder or back conditions from having to duck and squeeze through a door that is too small.
