A wall dog door order needs more than a width and height. You also need to know how far the opening travels through the finished wall, where the frame can sit, and how your pet will approach it from each side. Gathering those details before ordering helps keep the pet door, tunnel, and installation plan aligned.
Start with the finished wall, not the framing label
A wall described as “2-by-4 construction” does not tell you its complete finished thickness. Interior finishes and the exterior assembly also take up space. Ask your installer to establish the depth at the proposed opening and identify what that measurement includes. Do not remove finishes or drill exploratory holes simply to get an ordering measurement.
The Hale Wall Model product page specifies walls up to 10 inches thick and asks customers with greater depths to contact Hale. Treat an unknown or deeper wall as a question to resolve before placing the order.
Make a project record with five separate measurements

Keep these labels on your notes. A photo marked only “14 inches” leaves the person reviewing it to guess whether that is the pet passage, an old cutout, or the outside of a frame.
Look beyond the rectangle
Photograph the whole indoor wall and the corresponding outdoor area. Include baseboards, siding transitions, nearby corners, and the route to the yard. A close-up can show a surface detail; the wider picture explains why that detail matters.
Have the installer evaluate the wall assembly, services within it, and how the opening will be supported and finished. The installation plan should explain how the exterior will shed water and how the surrounding finishes will be restored. A pet door's product dimensions do not settle those construction decisions.
Check daily access as well as installation access
A pet may have room to stand in front of a door but little room to turn after passing through. Move portable obstacles out of the proposed route and look at it from both directions. Also leave enough space to operate the cover and maintain the door.

Send a complete question before ordering
A useful message is: “I am considering this model and size. My installer measured this finished wall depth. These photos show both sides, the floor levels, and the available frame area. Please confirm the configuration and any additional components needed.” If a measurement is still an estimate, label it that way.
